About WATAG

WATAG is a Nigerian non-profit organisation based in Abuja. Work covers four governance areas: women political participation, budget and public spending monitoring, policy analysis and advocacy, and government accountability. WATAG does not run candidates for office and does not take positions for or against political parties.

Subjects are chosen where public money, public decisions and women participation meet. Research comes first. Documented evidence determines which budgets, policies or accountability questions WATAG takes up, and which findings are published.

WATAG works on governance and accountability across institutions rather than on behalf of any party or candidate. Advocacy positions are documented separately from factual findings.

As a non-profit organisation working on public-interest questions, WATAG answers to the public it serves. Work is published so that findings, methods and positions can be examined by anyone.

Campaigns and subjects

Women political participation, budget and public spending monitoring, policy analysis and advocacy, and government accountability. Each area has its own subject, its own documented activity and its own published work.

Women political participation concerns candidacy, representation and participation in elected office. Budget and public spending monitoring concerns budget records, allocations and expenditure. Policy analysis and advocacy concerns bills, laws and policy documents. Government accountability concerns public records and decisions made by public institutions.

No. WATAG works on the conditions and questions around women political participation. It does not field candidates, endorse candidates, or work on behalf of any party.

A finding is what the available evidence establishes. A campaign position is a documented WATAG position on the question the evidence raises. Positions appear separately from findings in WATAG publications and on campaign pages.

Programmes and training

Women Governance Training, Budget Tracking Training, and Advocacy and Leadership Training. Each programme prepares participants for a specific kind of work in governance, budget tracking, or advocacy and leadership.

Training is aimed at women and community participants working on or interested in governance, public spending, policy or accountability questions. Where a specific programme carries its own eligibility requirement, that requirement is named on the programme page.

Where a programme carries a fee, the fee is named on the programme page. Where a programme is offered free of charge, this is stated on the programme page. WATAG does not collect fees that are not stated in advance.

Write to info@watag.com.ng and name the programme. The office replies with the current intake details and the next step.

Research and publications

Four categories. Reports are long-form studies. Policy briefs are short documents on bills, laws and policy questions. Budget monitoring publications examine budgets, allocations and expenditure. Accountability scorecards assess public institutions against accountability measures.

Publications appear on their category pages and can be read online. Where a download is offered, it is offered from the same page.

Publication follows research. A subject enters the research programme where evidence is available, and a publication follows once the work is complete. WATAG publishes findings, methods and any advocacy positions, and does not publish where the evidence does not support the conclusions.

WATAG does not currently accept unsolicited research submissions. Researchers interested in working with WATAG can write to info@watag.com.ng and describe the subject and the proposed collaboration.

Participation and support

Four routes are open. Volunteering brings time and effort. Joining the network brings presence at events and awareness of publications. Partnering brings institutional collaboration. Support brings material contribution. Each route has its own page under Get Involved.

Support to WATAG work is discussed directly. Write to info@watag.com.ng and name the subject and the form of support proposed. The office replies with the next step.

Yes. Institutions partner with WATAG on one or more of the four campaign subjects or on one of the training programmes. A partnership is agreed on terms set out at the start, with the subject, the period and the contribution named in writing.
